Over 100 nursing home workers, seniors, and people with disabilities from across Illinois gather in Springfield to urge nursing home reform
Over
100 nursing home workers in SEIU Healthcare Illinois & Indiana were joined
by seniors from the Jane Addams Senior Caucus and people with disabilities from
Access Living to urge lawmakers to pass meaningful nursing home reform before
the General Assembly adjourns in May.
“We
are here today to urge our lawmakers to make sure seniors and people with disabilities
have access to the quality care they deserve,” explained Mesha Williams, a CNA
in Springfield, Illinois. “That means
increasing staffing and training levels, and holding nursing home owners
accountable when they fail to provide quality care.”
Our
seniors, people with disabilities, and other nursing home residents deserve
access to quality care in nursing homes.
Instead, inadequate staffing and training requirements and the lack of
owner and administrator accountability have created unsafe conditions.
Nursing
home workers asked lawmakers to sign a pledge recognizing that our seniors and
people with disabilities deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.
